Stress brings on that temptation to over-control
Do you react to stress with stress?
Let’s start this blog with the subject of stress which is where this affliction begins. Our reaction to stress can mean that ‘whilst’ we think we’re dealing with it, we’re actually adding to it. My trail has certainly been one which has made me realise what damage stress can have, both emotionally and physically and whilst this is unavoidable in life, the way we deal with it is essential.
Any contributions to this subject are welcome but this whole concept is based on the fact the stress is the catalyst for panic over-controlling… why?
Without going into too much detail with the processes, stress quite simply makes us feel uncomfortable.
At this point of discomfort the panic sufferer follows the temptation to over-control by analysis or obsessive coping measures.. of course the answer to stress is quite simply to calm down, but I realised my attempts to calm down resulted in exactly the opposite as I was trying too hard to achieve it, leading to further tension.
If you are affected by stress and see a very strong link with your panicky state then please feel free to contribute here and I will try to answer your questions.
REPETITIVE PANIC IS RETROSPECTIVE AND FORCED.

Two yeara ago was diagnosed with a serious health condition.
Since then i have suffered with Anxiety, stress, and unwanted thoughts, such as i hate looking at myself in the mirror, i feel ugly, paranoid, what people think and are they talking about me!..
I suffer panic attacks where if i am ringing someone and they don’t answer the phone i think has something happened to them or have i done something to upset them, i pace the floor until i get hold of that person..
I’ve lost alot of confidence in almost everything i do.
Please could you help and advice me on this.
Many thanks
Hi Katie and sorry to hear of your situation, but one thing that is certain is that stressful events can leave us feeling very sensitised – almost like being on a constant lookout as we’re so on edge. I explain this in my panic attacks section, but needless to say the biggest problem sufferers have with this is when thoughts or feelings ‘come from nowhere’. The temptation then is to panic about this and my advice is simple…those thoughts feelings are completely understandable.
The subconscious is an incredibly powerful and fertile place and when we are stressed, those negative incoming thoughts/feelings can make us feel very uncomfortable all of the sudden – but there are reasons behind them. All I would say is remember that you are going through a very difficult time and don’t pressure yourself too much to be in control of everything – there will be times when you really have to dig in and accept you will feel negative and also how this will have affected your confidence – talk about it like your doing here and also remember it’s vital that you also let go of that sensation and don’t hang onto it when it hits you. The temptation is to hold on to negative thoughts when they happen – to analyse (like when you’re pacing the room to resolve it) so just relax your mind every time your tempted to put your foot on the pedal to do this. Come back whenever thanks
Hi Will,
Thank you for your reply,
I understand what you have said, and this makes perfect sense!.
I have worked at this with my mind over the last few weeks and it really does work.
I still get these paranoid thoughts but now i understand why they are happening and it’s takes time for me to settle but thanks to your website and our chat, you have really helped me to control my anxiety.
I will be in touch if i start to struggle again
Many thanks
Katie.
No problem Katie – exactly the phrase ‘time to settle’ is what really needs to be driven home here – when we feel uncomfortable – we are impatient and want total control of it – this adds to tension rather than reduces it. Come back whenever anyway thanks.
